We’re expanding our team of journalists and are looking to appoint a reporter. This is a fantastic role for an individual just starting out in their journalism career. In this role, you will help develop our coverage of the FE, apprenticeship and skills sector, within a growing and energetic team and show off your editorial capabilities to a large and engaged audience.

Who We Need…

You will have an NCTJ or equivalent qualification, including shorthand and an understanding of media law.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a passion for investigative journalism and provide examples of previously published work.

You will also have a nose for finding your scoops – be it by asking the tough questions, cultivating great contacts, or trawling through documents to find the details others miss.

This role would particularly suit an individual starting out their careers in journalism or someone covering general news who wants to specialise and become an expert in their field.

Our readers rely on us to break the news that matters to them, as well as delivering hard-hitting investigations and rapid analysis; so you’ll need to be able to turn around accurate copy quickly and have the organisational and team-work skills to source information, analyse and report on the big issues in education.

No two days will be the same, but your tasks will typically include reporting on breaking news in the sector, analysis of reports and statistics, interviews with leaders and those on the front-line and reporting from major sector events.

You’ll also be able to demonstrate an ability to engage with readers and source and promote stories via social media. Experience of turning complex data into stories would also be welcome.

You’ll also have an understanding, or enthusiasm to understand, of SEO and will be familiar with social media platforms.

Prior experience in journalism would be an advantage, but it is in no way essential because we expect the successful candidate to learn and grow on the job.

FE Week is the leading digital newspaper covering the further education, apprenticeships & skills sector in England, focusing on investigative education journalism. The newspaper is published during term-time but we break stories and host opinion pieces on our website all year round.

The skills agenda, including apprenticeships and technical training, is a key government priority, so we have an important job to do in holding ministers, government agencies and education institutions to account.
After eleven years of publishing FE Week, we continue to see healthy growth and maintain our position as the go-to information source in our sector.
The newspaper is published by Lsect Ltd, the custodians of the Annual Apprenticeship Conference and prestigious Festival of Education. Lsect also publishes Schools Week, a digital newspaper covering the schools sector.

Our founders, Shane Mann and Nick Linford, are the only shareholders in the company. So there are no loans to pay back. No distant investors to keep happy. The editorial team can concentrate on writing quality news that keeps our community knowledgeable.

We are apolitical: giving an equally tough time to all parties and ideas.

We are a small and social team with monthly company get-togethers and social occasions.

Where We Are Based…

Our office is located next to Liverpool St station, at Mindspace. We have a lovely office and environment. We operate a hybrid working model, with team members expected in the office two days per week.
