About The Job

Sifted, the award-winning tech news outlet backed by the Financial Times, is looking for an editorial assistant to join us covering the world of European startups and tech.

The role will offer mentorship in all aspects of modern journalism. The successful candidate will be involved in everything from writing articles and building a beat to newsletter production and social media. You’ll be a core part of the editorial team, working closely with (and being managed by) the editors and receiving mentorship from a friendly team of journalists with experience at outlets like the Financial Times, Reuters, Fortune, BBC, Bloomberg and Dagens Industri.

We strongly encourage applicants from underrepresented backgrounds to apply for this position.

About Sifted

Seven years after launching, Sifted’s high-quality journalism is a must-read for many investors, founders and people working in startups and scaleups across the continent. We produce must-read journalism and intelligence on Europe’s innovation economy, distributed via our website, newsletters, weekly podcast, proprietary data trackers, briefings and reports. We have a fast-growing subscription product and hold an annual event, The Sifted Summit.

We’re friendly, hard-working and passionate about what we do. We collaborate across disciplines and everyone has an impact across many areas of the business. We value feedback, honesty and clear communication.

What Will You Be Doing?

You’ll be working closely with the whole editorial team and the editors to help Sifted run a tight ship. Including:

  • Researching and writing articles
  • Building a network of sources
  • Proofing, uploading and scheduling newsletters
  • Helping the editors manage the content calendar and ensure our publishing process runs smoothly
  • Crafting excellent headlines
  • Helping to distribute Sifted’s journalism across social channels

Location

Our London office is on the Strand, where the majority of our editorial team work. (A third of our editorial team are based in continental Europe.) We ask all London-based editors and reporters to come into the office at least two days per week.

For this role, we’re open to applicants based in any major tech hub in Europe.

You’ll Need To Have:

  • Proactivity. This is a role where the more you put in, the more you will get out. Self-starters thrive at Sifted; if you are hungry to learn, curious about everything and keen to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into a wide range of tasks, you’ll do well.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, a fastidious approach to fact checking and accuracy and be good at prioritising and organising your time. You’ll also need to be comfortable (and excited!) working in an environment where things move fast and often change.
  • A competitive, but also collaborative, spirit.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • The ability to write to deadline with flair and personality.
  • An interest in learning more about the startup/tech industry.

Previous editorial assistants and interns at Sifted have gone on to become reporters (and senior reporters) in our newsroom, so this is a role with a clear progression path for those who jump on the opportunities given to them and are keen to learn.

Benefits

  • Salary of £30,000 p/a
  • 28 days annual leave, plus local public holidays
  • Company pension scheme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Hybrid work environment
  • Clear and thoughtful personal development pathways for all employees
  • Regular team socials and a great company culture
  • Enhanced parental leave
  • GymFlex
