Insider is hiring a UK-based fellow (entry-level video role) to join our News and Documentary video team as a video production fellow on one of its flagship shows, True Cost.

This is a fully paid fellowship opportunity, with an annual salary of £24,000 and a 6-month contract from June through December 2023. We have offices in Old Street and are working on a flexible basis; you are welcome to come in, or work remotely.

True Cost tells stories that reveal the hidden human, environmental or financial costs behind the things that we think we know. Many of the goods we buy or the foods we eat involve supply chains that disadvantage the people, or damage the habitats that produce them. Beyond the ticket price, this series brings home the “true cost.”

This role is in the UK but important to bear in mind that a lot of the True Cost team is based in the USA. That means time management, planning and committing to deadlines are essential to ensure a good workflow.

We expect our fellows to be involved in pitching, researching, writing and editing original and highly visual stories. The work includes writing briefs for freelance videographers and often asking difficult questions of interviewees and large corporations.  The job involves working closely with producers, editors and managers to ensure every story is compelling, accurate and fair.

Insider’s News and Documentary unit is always evolving. Show formats can change and we are always looking for new series ideas. Fellows may be called upon to work across a number of shows, including our daily news video output.

The candidate will help create videos for a global audience across the web and social media platforms. The ideal candidate should be familiar with our work and eager to learn and lean into Insider’s unique video style.

Candidates for the video production Fellowship should have:

  • A passion for storytelling through video, specifically about different cultures worldwide
  • Strong skills in Adobe Premiere
  • Proficiency in Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects and other Adobe software is a plus
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • An eye for detail and for moments that elevate videos to the next level
  • Ability to quickly edit videos and stick to a publishing deadline while keeping a close eye on details
  • Ability to fact-check information and view different sources for accuracy
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • A commitment to fair and inclusive storytelling

Example episodes of True Cost:

The true cost of turning lakes into land in Cambodia

How extreme breeding is leaving Pugs and Bulldogs breathless

The true cost of the green crab invasion, and how whiskey can help
