Job Description

Sub-editor training programme

We are looking for candidates to join our two-year training programme based in London.

Successful applicants will have an insatiable appetite for current affairs and culture. They will be able to demonstrate a passion for words and a keen interest in the mechanics of how stories are published on apps, online and in print.

You will be trained in sub-editing across our digital and print platforms, learning how to produce polished, accurate copy and clear, succinct headlines in house style and to tight deadlines.

You will complete a part-time NCTJ course and receive on-the-job training, mentoring and guidance from our award-winning journalists.

If you are offered a traineeship, you will start work at the end of August 2024.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Demonstrable passion for words and interest in how to construct a great news story
  • Experience writing or editing for a student publication, local news outlet or similar
  • Strong interest in current affairs, politics and culture
  • An understanding of The Times and The Sunday Times’ aesthetics and readership
  • An ability to build strong relationships and work comfortably in a team on collaborative projects as well as working on solo projects delivered to tight deadlines
  • A positive, flexible attitude to work
  • Able to work on a seven-day rota including evenings and weekends
