Hackney Citizen is the borough’s independent, free fortnightly newspaper.

We are looking for a full-time Local Democracy Reporter to cover our Hackney, Islington and Camden news patches, until 30 June 2025.

The 35-hour-a-week fixed-term role will see you hold these local councils to account and report on issues of concern to their communities.

As well as covering meetings and scouring agendas for news, we also expect you find and write stories that affect people’s lives.

This role is for a reporter who wants to make a difference, hold power to account and amplify community voices.

You will be home-based and will be expected to attend council and public meetings both online and in person – as well as to go out and talk to people.

The local democracy reporter scheme is funded via the BBC – however you will be employed by Citizen News & Media Limited, the company that publishes the Hackney Citizen.

Your copy will go out on a news wire and will be available to various news outlets, including the BBC.

This role is suitable for a qualified reporter or a trainee who has achieved (or is about to) their gold standard diploma from the NCTJ, or equivalent.
