This is a rare opportunity to join our award-winning global health team in a senior reporting role – and a chance to produce the deeply reported stories you have always wanted to write.

You will be a key component of the team’s ongoing work delivering original, hard-hitting, cross-border investigations that change the world for the better, and will also help to shape and develop the work of colleagues.

You will have extensive experience of either investigative journalism, health/science reporting or both. You must be able to demonstrate experience of off-diary journalism. You will care about improving the quality of investigative journalism across the world and be passionate about collaboration.

About the Bureau

The Bureau is the UK’s largest independent investigative journalism organisation. It exists to inform the public about the realities of power in today’s world.

Our investigations seek to expose systemic wrongs, challenge misinformation and spark change. With no corporate or political agenda, we bring to light serious issues affecting individuals and communities in the UK and around the world.

We work strategically and collaboratively to maximise the impact of our reporting and share our findings openly with local, national and international media outlets to reach as many people as possible.

About The Team

The Bureau’s global health team was launched in spring 2020. Since then, it has published groundbreaking investigations exploring the global tobacco industry and getting inside the details of Covid-19 vaccines, contracts and treatments. We tell the stories that others have not or cannot. We work with freelancers and publications around the world to report collaboratively and get the inside take on some of the world’s most pressing and unjust health issues.

Our stories have reached millions across the world, through publishing partnerships and pick-up in print and online publications, and on TV and radio.

Our award-winning reports have uncovered issues including “bullying” behaviour by big pharma in Latin America around Covid vaccine contracts, oxygen companies spreading misinformation about hospital oxygen generators, and tobacco companies using social media to promote new nicotine products to young people.

We put real-world impact at the heart of our work and have a full-time impact producer embedded in our team. Our stories change the world. For example, our investigations into medical oxygen have helped kick-start a change in access to this life-saving gas, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Other investigations have prompted MEPs to ask questions of a Pfizer executive in the European Parliament, contributed to the EU ombudsman opening an investigation into the EU’s coronavirus chaos, and – we hope – have also helped save lives by revealing information that would have otherwise remained obscured.

You Will Be A Good Fit If You Have:

• A track-record of finding leads, strong reporting and delivering original, compelling stories, preferably in global health
• At least five years of journalism experience, preferably in investigative or long-form journalism
• Knowledge of global health issues and extensive contacts in the field
• Understanding of media law and journalistic ethics
• Strong attention to detail and diligence
• Experience working collaboratively and in a team
• A passion for accountability journalism

Additional desirable experience and skills for this role might include:

• Broadcast and/or public speaking experience
• Data journalism skills
• Creativity and originality in storytelling

It is envisaged that this is a full-time role, primarily based in our London office, but as the Bureau is committed to supporting people who require a more flexible approach to working this is open to discussion.
