Local Storytelling Exchange is looking for two Freelance Associate Storytellers who can find stories about energy, climate, and nature. If you’re a dynamic, self-motivated multimedia journalist based in Wales, it would love to hear from you.
The Local Storytelling Exchange, in partnership with Round Our Way and Climate Cymru, is seeking two Freelance Associate Storytellers – one based in and covering North & Mid Wales, and one based in and covering South & Mid Wales – to find and share stories of the climate transition in action and local climate impacts within those areas over the coming months.
We prioritise stories that reach non-activist audiences, particularly those who may be more sceptical that action on climate is good news for them.
Working with the Exchange’s Commissioning Editors, you will be able to work independently, be an excellent relationship builder and a sensitive storyteller who can convey what the green transition looks like in your region through action-based, people-focused stories, and the reality of climate impacts and extreme weather for people in the area, such as flooding, heatwaves and wildfires.
Spoken and written knowledge of the Welsh language is desirable but not essential.
You will ideally have existing contacts across local and regional media in your area. The Exchange works across all forms of media and as such we are looking for all-round candidates who can capture video, audio and photos alongside strong written articles.
The Exchange is seeking to find and amplify voices and stories that reflect the diversity of our society in terms of lived experience, cultural or socio-economic background, ethnicity and geography/region and strongly encourages people of all backgrounds to apply for these roles.
Responsibilities
- Curate and develop people-led stories of climate action and impacts using persuasive content tailored to target audiences and relevant media and social channels.
- Collect visual and audio assets where relevant / develop stories in other formats (e.g. video content, images, social media) to extend the reach of the story.
- Build relationships with local media to place these stories in relevant outlets – including social media channels.
- Use active listening and empathy to support people in telling their stories in a clear and authentic way, building on their own values.
- Identify and sign up expert spokespeople to the Exchange’s spokesperson database.
- Work closely with the Exchange’s Commissioning Editors to prioritise story subjects most relevant to your region and deliver on core project objectives.
- Be an “ear to the ground” for your region, feeding back information and potential story opportunities to the project team
Fee and timeline
We welcome applications from freelancers for this opportunity, with a budget of up to £12,000 for 60 days’ work (roughly two days per week) until July 2026. We are flexible as to how those days are split throughout the week.
How to apply
To apply please send a CV, three samples of your work including a link to at least one video clip (this does not have to be climate-focused) and a short (max 500 words) covering letter which clearly states the region you would like to focus on, to: jobs@localstoryexchange.org
