The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) is a non-profit organisation that supports informed debate on energy and climate change issues in the UK. We provide independent analysis and accessible briefings to media and other stakeholders on key issues, including land use, transport, power sector, and heating and buildings, with a UK focus.
We are looking to recruit a programme lead to work on factchecking, countering misinformation around the net zero transition and providing factually accurate briefings to journalists.
Key responsibilities
- Keeping abreast of developments and emerging themes in climate and energy policy and the wider political context;
- Monitoring and analysing media coverage and the wider debate on climate and energy issues, identifying opportunities to comment, provide context and/or offer insights;
- Preparing or commissioning briefings and communications materials for journalists relating to specific policy areas;
- Commissioning and conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis using a range of data types and sources;
- Building and maintaining a strategy to engage with journalists across the media landscape to help them improve the accuracy of reporting;
- Building and maintaining a network of stakeholders including industry experts, sector specialists and journalists in relevant fields.
Knowledge and experience
- Significant experience of working in media, communications, or PR, with a deep understanding of the UK media landscape;
- A track record of building and maintaining productive and trusting relationships with journalists, over and above basic pitching;
- Understanding of UK decarbonisation policies and politics and the key challenges and opportunities associated with the net zero transition;
- A strong analytical background and understanding of using qualitative and quantitative findings to explain and illustrate.
Skills
- Ability to analyse articles on a range of different climate issues for balance and accuracy;
- Strong written communication skills to write concise and compelling briefs for journalists, social media and other platforms to communicate complex policy areas in an accurate and accessible way;
- Experience building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships and networks with a range of different stakeholders;
- Ability to work independently and use initiative to drive forward projects alone, while understanding the role in the wider team and keeping colleagues updated on developments.
- Comfortable with working at pace and to short deadlines.
- A journalistic background in a related field would be ideal.
Terms and Conditions
This full-time position is initially offered as a nine-month fixed term contract starting in January 2024.
Salary: £45,000 – £55,000
Hours: 35 hours per week – exact hours to be agreed (see below)
Location: Hybrid – based in our London office, you must be able to travel to London at a minimum 1-2 days per month. Travel within the UK may be necessary from time to time.
We are advertising for two roles in this team who will need together to cover the news cycle from 6am-11pm. This role will likely not be 9-5, but the intention is for it to be as flexible and family friendly as possible. We would like to work with the ideal candidates to agree how the shifts will work, and who will cover early mornings or late evenings. This could work around other life commitments for example, taking a break for the school run.
