Journo Resources is a social enterprise that makes the media look more like it should. We’re looking for a part-time deputy editor to help us realise this goal and push the site forward in 2022 and beyond.

This will be a senior and key role in the organisation, deputising for our director and editor. You’ll work across all areas of the business, and will be equally passionate about ensuring our financial sustainability as our editorial output.

The Role

This role is broadly split across three areas, which we expect to be a roughly equal amount of time. You will also be responsible for some management responsibilities for junior members of staff.

Editorial

You’ll take the lead on producing high-quality original content for our advice section and other areas of the website. This will involve:

  • Pitching and writing a long-form, original feature for this section every 1-2 months – we focus on quality, not quantity.
  • Commissioning and editing weekly features from our trainee journalists, fellows, and freelance writers, helping them to put together stand-out, portfolio pieces.
  • Working with our admin assistant to make sure our lists and other resources are updated on a weekly basis,

Finances & Funding

You’ll help to support our director in pushing our path to financial sustainability. This will include:

  • Approaching and pitching Journo Resources to other organisations for editorial partnerships on a regular basis.
  • Taking the lead on existing clients as the key point of contact, writing editorial content, running partnership events, and writing campaign reports.
  • Working with our membership manager and director to increase membership sign-ups to the website
  • Assisting our director in funding and grant applications.

Social Media

You’ll help to drive forward our social media strategy, helping us to reach even more people and support them better:

  • Taking the lead on at least one of our priority social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, TikTok), and putting together a weekly schedule of engaging content.
  • Supporting other colleagues with the running of other social media accounts, and our secondary accounts (Facebook Group, LinkedIn).

About You

We’re looking for someone with at least three years’ experience working as a professional journalist. This is a senior position in our team that involves independent working, management of others, and experience of working on original stories. As such, this position isn’t suitable for entry-level candidates.

This could be the job for you if these points also sound like you. We don’t expect you to necessarily hit all of these points, but you will need to rise to them as the job progresses. In short, we’d rather hear from you than not!

  • You’re passionate about helping to increase access to the journalism industry and believe in our mission,
  • You have experience in coming up with original, well-researched stories, based on interviews, analysis and research and take a quality over quantity approach,
  • You have experience of editing and commissioning other writers,
  • You know your way around all things social, having previously worked on accounts for yourself, another publication or brand,
  • You’re well versed in digital tools such as WordPress, Google Drive, Slack and various analytics programmes,
  • You’re happy to muck in with a range of tasks – we’re a tiny team, so you’ll need to be as comfortable working on your work features as you are working on the funding side.
  • This is a remote role, so you’ll need to be able to work independently, keep yourself motivated and manage your time effectively.
  • You’re familiar with Journo Resources work, and feel like you understand our style and tone of voice.

This may be the role if you’re a freelancer looking for some stable income, or perhaps if you already have a part-time job at another organisation.

The Admin Details

Turns out there’s a lot of stuff you need to know when you’re hiring someone. Here are the main details:

  • This is initially a fixed term contract for six months. We’d love this to become a permanent role with expanded hours in the future, but this depends on future funding. As a team, we’ll work as hard as possible to make this happen.
  • We believe the media shouldn’t just be tied to London (and we also don’t have an office), so you can be based anywhere in the UK as you will be working remotely. You’ll need to have the right to work in the UK, as we don’t have a VISA sponsor agreement.
  • You’ll work three days a week. Ideally, this would be Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday, but we’re open to hearing what you need!
  • Our team generally works from 10am-6pm, but again, we’re happy to discuss this if you’re an early-riser, have childcare commitments, or anything else.
  • This role will report to our director and founder, Jem Collins. You’ll also work with our membership manager (currently being hired) and design lead Jack. You’ll take on some management responsibilities for our admin assistant, trainee journalists and fellows.
  • The salary is £30,000pa full time equivalent. This works out at £18,000pa at the pro-rata rate. This is £1,500 per month.
  • Everyone at Journo Resources gets unlimited holiday with a minimum you must use – we all need a break, after all. More is available on a fair use policy. The full time equivalent is 25 days plus the eight English bank holidays – a total of 33 days. Pro-rata this is a minimum of 19.8 days a year.
  • Everyone is offered the chance to join our pension scheme, regardless of minimum opt-in age. We contribute at a rate of 3 percent.
  • You will also get free access to all our Journo Resources career development resources, including professional development events and external training.

Our Commitment To Hiring

Our previous data shows us that people tend to rush applications within the first few days. Please don’t panic – take your time. Here’s why:

  • We look at every single job application and don’t start shortlisting until the job has closed. It doesn’t matter if you’re the first person to apply or the last.
  • Everyone who applies will receive an email to let them know the outcome of their applications, with feedback of why it was or wasn’t progressed. So if you haven’t heard from us, don’t worry, it just means we haven’t looked yet.
  • We always keep job applications open until at least the closing date listed. We will never close a job early, so you’re able to plan ahead with your application.

We’re an organisation that’s committed to making journalism look more like the people it serves and are keen to hear from people from all backgrounds. We’re particularly keen to hear from people who are underrepresented in journalism, including but not limited to: people of colour, disabled, trans, and working class applicants.
