Journo Resources and the Journalists’ Charity are delighted to be partnering to provide a new drop-in mentoring scheme, designed to support working journalists looking to take their next steps within the industry.

The Moving Forwards Mentoring Scheme will allow UK-based journalists to book one-to-one calls with experienced mentors who can offer support on job applications, next steps, building confidence, and more. The 45-minute-long sessions will be run by experts from the Journo Resources community, each with more than a decade of journalism experience.

James Brindle, CEO of the Journalists’ Charity, said: “At a time when journalism has never been more important, we’re delighted to be partnering with Journo Resources to help more journalists focus on their career development.”

“In such a challenging and volatile world, the charity is determined to play its part to help journalists and support journalism. This exciting new initiative complements our existing support offer, which helps journalists at all ages and stages with advice, training, and financial assistance.”

The scheme aims to fill a gap in the market for those looking to take the next steps in their careers, as well as ease the rising pressure on existing mentoring schemes, which often attract hundreds of applicants.

Jem Collins, founder and director of Journo Resources, said: “We’re so thrilled to be working with the Journalists’ Charity on this pilot; we’ve long admired their commitment to supporting journalists across the UK.

”For the past three years, mentoring has been one of the most requested types of support by our community, but the pressure on existing schemes continues to rise. We believe that even just one or two bespoke sessions can make a huge difference — which is what this scheme will offer.”

Those who complete a session will leave with a practical plan and resources, and, depending on the nature of their needs, might be offered follow-up support.

Mentoring sessions will be bookable every week, with new slots made available at 12pm on Fridays. You can find out more and book sessions here.

The Journalists’ Charity was founded by Charles Dickens more than 160 years ago to help journalists going through hard times. Today, the organisation supports journalists from every sector nationwide with advice and training, financial support, and emergency assistance. Since 2022, the charity’s first jobs fund has helped hundreds of new starters to join or stay in the industry — supporting the future of journalism when it has never been more important.

Journo Resources is a social enterprise, founded in 2016, that supports journalists at all stages of their careers with free tools, resources, and advice. It aims to build a fairer, more transparent journalism industry for everyone, especially those from marginalised communities. Every week, its online services are used by more than 40,000 journalists.
