Journo Resources is looking to grow our team with a senior journalist who will write original features and investigations, working on a freelance basis. As a regular part of our tiny team, you’ll share our big ambitions to shake up the journalism industry, and will play a key role in helping us to achieve our goals.

We’re looking for someone with at least two years’ experience working as a journalist, who can bring fresh and original ideas for features for our editorial advice section. Whether it’s profiling other journalists, exploring how to report on key topics, or looking at solutions that could fix our industry, you’ll have plenty of ideas about what we should be writing.

As a digital publication, we’re also looking for someone who knows their way around WordPress and knowledge of our key social media platforms would be a bonus (Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook). As a freelance role, it’s also vital you’re able to manage your own time and deadlines. This role would be perfect for a freelancer looking for a steady, reliable gig.

There is also the scope to get involved with our varied events programme, suggesting ideas for panels and workshops, as well as presenting and hosting sessions. This would be paid at an additional rate.

The Role

This is a part-time, freelance role, where you will be responsible for producing three stories a month, with delivery staggered across the month. We’re offering a total fee of £500 for three stories a month and are happy to offer this role either by invoice or PAYE, depending on your circumstances.

You will report directly to our editor and director Jem Collins, who will help you shape stories for our audience. Your pieces will be a mixture of ideas you pitch yourself, as well as ones assigned to you from our ideas list. Trust us when we say there’s a lot we haven’t got around to covering yet! Either way though, we promise that you won’t be doing rewrites.

You’ll also get the chance to shape how these stories look on our social media platforms, as well as to feed into our wider strategy and plans – you’ll be a key part of our team. Depending on your career goals, there may be scope for this role to develop to a part-time staff role in future.

About You

  • At least two years’ experience working as a journalist, with evidence of producing original stories and features,
  • Full of ideas for ways we can expand our coverage and widen our outlook,
  • A high level of attention to detail,
  • An understanding of all things digital and social, such as WordPress, Slack, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok,
  • Organised and self-motivated, and able to manage your deadlines and projects,
  • Familiar with Journo Resources work, understanding our style and tone of voice.

Our Commitment To Hiring

Our previous data shows us that people tend to rush applications within the first few days. Please don’t panic – take your time. Here’s why:

  • We look at every single job application and don’t start shortlisting until the job has closed. It doesn’t matter if you’re the first person to apply or the last.
  • Everyone who applies will receive an email to let them know the outcome of their applications, with feedback of why it was or wasn’t progressed. So if you haven’t heard from us, don’t worry, it just means we haven’t looked yet.
  • We always keep job applications open for at least the closing date listed. We will never close a job early, so you’re able to plan ahead with your application.

We’re an organisation that’s committed to making journalism look more like the people it serves and are keen to hear from people from all backgrounds. Yes, including you.
