We are looking for a news journalist to work for our multi-award-winning general practice title.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who loves news reporting and is at the start of their career to join a multi-award-winning, market-leading team.

You do not have to be an expert in health, medicine, or have anything more than basic knowledge of the UK health sector (though it helps). What you definitely need is an ability to spot the right news line, a hunger for breaking exclusive stories ahead of our competitors and the ability to write clean copy, quickly.

Working predominantly across online, the perfect candidate will have flair for writing and enjoy making contacts and sourcing stories. They will work collaboratively in a small team, and be part of a friendly, stimulating editorial environment at the magazine, which is one of a bigger group of healthcare publications.

About The Role

The benefits of this role are endless. In the past five years, six of our reporters have picked up individual awards, and all have been approached to work for the nationals or step up within the company. We have great company benefits and this is a hybrid remote/face-to-face role, with one day a week (or more, if you like) in our offices in Farringdon, in the City of London – though we will accept complete remote working for the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Writing around two-three news stories a day, including one lead
  • Finding exclusive stories
  • Building contacts to share with the rest of the news team
  • Occasionally writing news-led features and investigations if they so wish for Pulse magazine
  • Working within tight print and online deadlines
  • Going out to meetings and conferences
  • Working with the rest of the editorial team to shape the content and direction of the magazines
  • Uploading content to the website.

Key skills

Essential

  • A portfolio of news stories, which can be from school or university newspapers, local press or any other publication;
  • An appetite for writing news in a fast-paced environment;
  • The ability to write fast, accurate copy;
  • A basic knowledge of the UK health sector.

Highly desirable

  • Experience of working in a busy newsroom
  • Some experience of writing about health policy.

Desirable

  • Science degree;
  • Experience of data journalism
