The Know is on a mission to help people start their day feeling informed and hopeful, and we’re looking for an excellent writer to produce our newsletters and translate some of this content to our social media platforms. The perfect candidate for this role would thrive in a startup environment, work well independently and feel confident determining the must-cover stories for our audience in line with our ethos.

They would have a passion for news and social media, and be great at simplifying complex issues under time pressure. They’d be a digital native with an eye for a good story, with an understanding of how topics land differently on various platforms.

This is a rare opportunity to work closely with our co-founder and editor, and will suit a hand-raiser excited to make their mark in a high-growth media startup.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Writing our daily (Monday-Friday) newsletters in our distinctive tone of voice, selecting stories that fit our ethos and interest our demographic. This will require a 7:30am start.

  • Helping to choose the stories that will land best on social, designing daily posts on Canva.

  • Pitching and writing 1-2 original guides per month for our website, often relating to lifestyle, leisure, and self-care.

  • Dreaming up and bringing to life authentic ways to introduce our clients’ products and brands to our audience, again in our distinctive tone of voice. This might look like writing a sponsored guide for our website, or writing and designing an explainer for social.

  • Coming to our editorial meetings brimming with ideas about the cultural and social topics and trends we should be bringing to our audience, and maintaining our content calendar.

  • Jumping on other projects, like our ambassador programme or help us out with marketing copy. We’re a small team, and we love people who are interested in taking responsibility for new initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Passionate about engaging people with the news and have a strong understanding of how best to connect with our demographic (women in the UK aged 20-45).

  • Aligned with our mission of creating succinct summaries of important news in a neutral, jargon-free and friendly way.

  • A skill for writing succinct and relatable copy under tight deadlines, a keen eye for detail and a great sense of judgement. You can recognise and amend phrasing that might feel emotionally charged or land insensitively with our audience.

  • Confident with using digital platforms like Canva, newsletter platforms, Squarespace and social media.

  • Demonstrable journalism experience (bylines in well-known publications would be a plus).
