Bristol24/7 is seeking a motivated journalist to join our small, dedicated team as deputy editor.

From covering stories across the city to shining a light on communities, this is a hands-on role that would be perfect for a reporter with a flair for telling stories and a passion for Bristol.
Alongside writing stories for Bristol24/7’s website and bi-monthy print magazine, the successful candidate will help manage a small team of reporters, freelancers and interns, and play a key role in the magazine production process.

Bristol24/7 is the biggest independent publication in the South West, with unrivalled coverage of local news, culture and entertainment. We are also a community interest company and were named one of the top 100 social enterprises in the country this year as part of the NatWest SE100. Our content is read by hundreds of thousands of people – an audience that’s growing all the time. Advertising and membership support our independent journalism and fund community projects that change lives.

About You

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and full of ideas, have great writing and editing skills and an eye for a story. Managing social media, taking photos, writing newsletters and creating video content will all play a key part of the role. The deputy editor will need to be able to juggle a busy workload, have a meticulous eye for detail and meet tight deadlines.

The Role

The role offers plenty of scope to develop both journalism and management skills, with the requirement to stand in for the editor when necessary, respond to queries and complaints and represent Bristol24/7 on the public stage.

Essential Qualities:

  • Excellent writing and editing skill
  • Ability to look after your own workload and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines
  • A keen eye for detail and a proactive attitude
  • Social media experience
  • Passion for storytelling and current affairs
  • Willing to work evenings or weekends on a rota

Desirable Qualities:

  • Journalism qualification
  • Management experience
  • Experience of creating video
  • Experience of using WordPress and Mailchimp
  • Interest in or knowledge of Bristol
