Are you an experienced political writer or editor looking for the next move? Or a content editor seeking an exciting new challenge?

The BBC-backed Local Democracy Reporting scheme has already transformed the way that councils are reported. But we’re looking for a content editor who will lead these specialist reporters in our south east newsrooms, taking their journalism to the next level.

You will be the lynchpin of our politics coverage across Surrey, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and beyond, guiding our team’s coverage and ensuring councils and other public bodies are held to account in a way that’s lively, engaging and relevant.

We are looking for a dynamic leader who understands the complexities of politics, but is passionate about simple-storytelling and creating content that engages audiences online.

You’ll also need an excellent set of digital skills, working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to craft strong headlines and social sells – as well as spot and act on analytics trends.

This is an ideal opportunity for an ambitious specialist reporter looking to step into a news desk role – or for an experienced news editor to lead a team of reporters focused on solid, local news issues.

Key Responsibilities

What will the role involve?

  • Leading a team of 6 local democracy reporters in Reach’s south and eastern newsrooms. Identifying key stories and political themes in agendas and meetings – and ensuring these are told in an engaging and thought-provoking manner
  • Providing mentorship, training and development of the team
  • Editing and publishing of stories to a high standard, in line with best headline and SEO practice
  • Monitoring of audience analytics to identify high-engagement themes and potential follow-up opportunities
  • Ensure we provide an effective and robust service which meets our partner requirements, BBC editorial expectations and
  • impartiality standards.

The Ideal Candidate

Who are we looking for?

  • Ability write about politics and local government in an engaging way, removing jargon and identifying key points of audience interest
  • First-class digital publishing skills and ability to use Escenic competently and quickly
  • Content desk experience preferable, but these roles could be considered as entry-level newsdesk positions and experienced senior journalists (minimum two years) will be considered
  • Demonstrable interest and knowledge of local government
  • Excellent communication skills. This role involves working with multiple newsrooms. The ability to maintain clear and concise communication with colleagues in a fast-paced environment is vital.
  • Rigorous attention to accuracy – particularly spellings and place names.
  • Sound knowledge of audience analytics tools
  • Solid understanding of social media and comfortable using social publishing tools
  • Up-to-date legal and IPSO code knowledge
