A freelance data journalist is required for an immediate start to work on an upcoming project on The Banker.

Main Responsibilities

  • Research, analyse and write compelling data-driven stories focused on banking and financial services.
  • Collaborate with the digital editor to create interactive data visualisations, charts and infographics that enhance storytelling.
  • Identify trends and patterns in banks’ performance, acquisitions and new business models, offering fresh angles and insights​.
  • Develop sources within banks and related industries
  • Work with The Banker Database team to extract and analyse banking data.
  • Help test AI tools and refine any AI-generated insights by ensuring accuracy and adding editorial context.
  • Support the wider editorial team with developing newsletters, special reports and other types of formats that increase value for subscribers.

Experience and Skills

Essential

  • Proven experience as a data journalist with a strong grasp of banking and finance.
  • Expertise in working with financial datasets and ability to translate complex data into compelling stories.
  • Strong data analysis skills and familiarity with financial intelligence platforms such as Bloomberg and Dealogic.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with an ability to produce concise, high-impact analysis suited to a time-poor audience.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable

  • Experience creating charts, infographics and visual narratives for data-driven storytelling.
