People Management – the official media brand of the CIPD – is more than just the UK’s leading HR and learning title, it’s the biggest business media brand in the country by audience size, comprising a range of award-winning channels including a monthly magazine, a daily newsletter received by more than 120,000 people, commercial brand extensions, popular social media accounts and a soon-to-be relaunched website.

It’s a hectic and highly versatile editorial proposition – and it’s also great fun. We cover stories of national importance, from the impact of #MeToo on UK workplaces to the possibility of vaccine mandates in businesses. Former People Management staffers have gone on to become editors and writers on major newspapers and magazines, giving the brand a deserved reputation for quality journalism.

About The Role

We’re looking for a deputy editor to help oversee the brand’s development and join our exciting team of journalists. This is an excellent opportunity for an existing deputy or section editor looking for a new challenge, or a proven B2B journalist looking to step into their next role.

The deputy editor’s role spans all People Management’s channels, with responsibilities including commissioning and editing of long-form journalism, on-page magazine proofing, oversight of the website and newsletter channels as required, writing, advising on commercial activity and client liaison. The successful candidate will deputise for the editor when required across all their duties, and will also be expected to develop their own network of relevant contacts, as well as contributing actively and knowledgeably to creative discussions.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of writing for and editing B2B brands, as well as:

  • An understanding of how people issues affect organisations, and knowledge of the broader context in which businesses operate

  • The ability to build and maintain a network of contacts that will be useful sources of context, commentary and breaking news

  • The ability to oversee and contribute to magazine production, including flatplanning, copy editing, sub-editing with InDesign and proofreading, as well as pitching content ideas and demonstrating a high level of creativity in how content is presented both online and in print

  • Excellent organisational skills

  • Experience using a CMS and making decisions about the presentation of journalistic content in digital channels

  • The ability to coach and develop less experienced journalists to achieve high standards of editorial excellence

  • Confidence presenting either in podcasts and videos or at live events would be an added bonus
