Do you have what it takes to join the UK’s best women’s spiritual title? If you are educated to degree level, have a passion for women’s magazines, are commercially driven and have a head full of feature ideas – then you could be just what we are looking for.

With a strong eye for detail and an excellent grasp of grammar and the English language, you’ll be an experienced journalist and a confident and accurate writer adept at adjusting your style to suit a target reader. You will have a commercial head, be skilled in social media, and an ability to engage with an audience. And good subbing skills are a prerequisite for this role.

You may already be a deputy looking for a new challenge or a features editor who wants to take the next step up. You’ll be involved with all aspects of production, ensuring you hit tight deadlines month after month, be highly organised and able to work with the editor to produce 12 issues a year alongside a small, driven and super-skilled team of design, promotions and advertising staff.

You will need to be just as comfortable commissioning spiritual experts to write reader-friendly copy, liaising with PRs and subbing the work of our columnists, to helping to create inspiring features lists and engaging social media campaigns.

With your finger firmly on the digital and social media pulse, you’ll know just the right hook to appeal to our followers, and will be inspired, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about coming up with engaging ideas and generating creative copy for Soul & Spirit’s multi-media platforms.

If writing and commissioning engaging copy and heading up a successful and expanding national publication sounds like a challenge you’re equipped for, we want to hear from you.

Duties include:

  • Researching and writing features to a first rate standard to deadline for print and online

  • Commissioning features, liaising with contributors and PRs and interviewing experts over the phone, as well as via email

  • Keeping up to date with industry news and trends

  • Sourcing high value competitions, giveaways and reader offers

  • Producing editorial for supplements

  • Curating and writing news and regulars

  • Organising and overseeing photo shoots

  • Subbing and proofing own copy as well as other people’s

  • Contributing brilliant, commercial editorial ideas

  • Overseeing pages from start to finish and liaising with designers

  • Providing commercial editorial support to the advertising department

  • Contributing to many aspects of the magazine’s social media and online editorial activity, including organising competitions and takeovers, newsletters, writing and uploading blog posts etc

  • Working with the editorial, promotions and advertising teams on the magazine awards to ensure their continued growth and success.

  • Representing the magazine and department at shows and events (may involve travel/overnight stay)

  • Attending meetings both in and out of house

  • Managing junior staff (when relevant to the role), and overseeing their development

  • Budget control

  • Liaising with other departments and providing support for promotional, commercial, event and online activity

  • Responsible to editor

  • Deputising in the absence of the editor

Job description:

Deputy Editor, Food and lifestyle department, Aceville Publications Ltd.

This is a full time, permanent role based at our offices in Colchester, Essex.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Editor to develop the title commercially and editorially. This is a management role.
