As a trainee sub-editor, you’ll check the written text of Paranting Magazine, its website and ad hoc copy before they’re published. You’ll look at grammar, spelling, tone and style to make sure it’s all correct, and will need to check facts and make sure the content suits its target audience.

You’ll also lay out the story on the page, write headings and captions, and might be involved with overall page design with the senior art director.

What You’ll Learn

As a trainee sub-editor, you will learn how to:

  • edit copy written by reporters or features writers, to remove spelling mistakes and grammatical errors;
  • learn how to rewrite material so that it flows or reads better, as well as making sure it adheres to the house style of a particular publication;
  • ensure stories meet word count;
  • write headlines that capture the essence of a story;
  • learn how to write standfirsts;
  • liaise with writers for any questions on the copy;
  • learn how to fact check;
  • adhere to copyright laws making sure content isn’t libellous or go against the publication’s policy;
  • learn how to edit photos and write picture captions;
  • proofread complete pages and submit to editor;
  • understand how to read a flat plan;
  • learn how to lay out pages and feed into page design;
  • use software such as InDesign and Photoshop.

As part of the placement, you will be encouraged to contribute to Paranting Magazine to build your portfolio as well as create your own content as part of the project. This could be print, online or multimedia.You will also be given additional employability support, including looking at CVs and cover letters, mock interviews and communication skills.

This role does not require a degree – Paranting is looking for applicants that are enthusiastic and self-motivated. Knowledge or social media is desirable. Please mention Journo Resources when you apply, it really helps us out.
