The Know is on a mission to help people start their day feeling informed and hopeful, and we’re looking for an excellent writer to produce our newsletters and translate some of this content to our social media platforms. The perfect candidate for this role will thrive in a start-up environment, work well independently and feel confident writing the must-cover stories for our audience in line with our ethos.

They will also have a passion for news and social media, and be great at simplifying complex issues under time pressure.

This is a rare opportunity to work closely with our co-founder and editor, and will suit a hand-raiser excited to make their mark in a high-growth media startup.

Responsibilities

  • Write our daily (Monday-Friday) newsletters in our distinctive tone of voice, selecting stories that fit our ethos and interest our demographic. This will require a 7:30am start and an ability to thrive under tight deadlines, as our newsletter goes out by 9am.
  • Pitch and write 1-2 original guides per month for our website.
  • Help the team with designing Instagram posts on Canva.
  • Come to our editorial meetings prepared with ideas about the political, cultural and social trends we should be bringing to our audience, and maintain our content calendar.
  • Produce content that introduces our clients’ products and brands to our audience in an authentic way. This might look like writing a sponsored guide for our website, or writing and designing an explainer for social.
  • Jump on other projects, like our ambassador programme or helping us out with marketing copy. We’re a small team, and we love people who are interested in taking responsibility for new initiatives.

Requirements

  • You’re passionate about writing, engaging people with the news and have a strong understanding of how best to connect with our largest demographic (women in the UK aged 25-45).
  • You’re aligned with our mission of creating succinct news summaries in a neutral, jargon-free and non-sensationalist way.
  • You can recognise and amend phrasing that might feel emotionally charged or land insensitively with our audience.
  • You’re able to work under tight deadlines and to a high level of detail.
  • You can efficiently execute new initiatives with little guidance and thrive in a startup environment.
  • You’re confident with using digital platforms like Canva, newsletter platforms, Squarespace and social media.
  • You have demonstrable journalism experience (bylines in well-known publications and a qualification would be a plus).
