This job will be working on setting up a new collaborative that will bring together the best community-based independent and local journalism from all over Scotland into a curated news product.

It will involve setting up a network of publishers and running a news website as well as promoting it through social media and other communication channels.

The project is just getting started, so this will be a chance to be involved with an exciting new media project from the offset.

The project is made possible with funding from the Google News Initiative through their Innovation Challenge Project.

About This Role:

This role will be assisting the project manager to coordinate and facilitate the development, launch and running of the project.

Please note, that as this position is grant funded, the contract is only up until 31 October 2023. We hope that after this date, we will be in a position to extend the contract, but this is not guaranteed at this stage. It will be reviewed on 31 August 2023.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationships with community and local journalism publishers all around Scotland
  • Help to facilitate product development and impact tracking sessions
  • Help coordinate, track and organise various project aspects
  • Contribute to communications and marketing strategy and help promote the project
  • Creating and managing social media accounts
  • Help develop an engaged membership programme and increase member numbers
  • Research further funding possibilities including ad sales and grant funding
  • Write copy and edit web content
  • Contribute to discussion on strategy and business growth
  • Additional research and admin tasks as required

Location: Can be based in our Govanhill newsroom, or at home anywhere in Scotland

Terms: 2 days per week — temporary freelance contract until 31 October 2023

Salary/rate: £140 per day

Deadline: 12pm on Monday 19 December

Candidate Requirements*:

Essential

  • Interest in helping to strengthen independent community/local media

  • Experience of co-ordinating projects

  • Able to take the initiative and work proactively

  • Able to work as a part of a team

  • Ability to build and develop working relationships and partnerships

  • Experience of building social media audiences

  • Highly organised and details orientated

  • Proficient with commonly used computer programmes such as Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Experience of using file-sharing platforms such as Google Drive

Desirable

  • Experience in journalism

  • Knowledge of – and contacts within – the Scottish media

  • Experience working for a social enterprise/third-sector organisation

  • Experience of working in a membership organisation

  • Experience of facilitating meetings online

  • Able to travel to Govanhill for occasional in-person meetings
