The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) is a non-profit organisation with offices in London and Washington DC that analyses and actively disrupts the architecture of online hate and misinformation. We do this by exposing individuals and networks behind online hate and misinformation, introducing costs (financial, professional, and reputational) for those seeking to spread hate and misinformation, and providing public advice to stop their spread online.

We are looking for an experienced Press Officer to join our London office at a time of rapid growth for CCDH. Reporting to the Head of Campaigns, the Press Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day representation of CCDH’s values, policy and research in the UK and EU media.  The successful applicant will ensure that the CCDH’s work is well represented across all media platforms, including broadcast, print and online media. The position requires them to be one of the organisation’s primary points of contact with the media.

The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter with at least 2 years’ experience working in a media or campaigns environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring that CCDH’s research, analysis, and aims are effectively communicated across all media channels.
  • Draft press releases, quotes, reactive statements, broadcast pitches, and opinion pieces. Write, edit, and distribute content, including material for websites, and other types that take the organization’s message to the public.
  • Monitoring the daily and international news agendas to find opportunities for our research, insight, and reports to be uplifted.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with journalists in multiple types of media outlets, including print, radio, and non-traditional media outlets
  • Respond to breaking news and incoming requests via identified media outlets, identifying opportunities within news cycle for CCDH intervention and analysis.
  • Communicating with media personnel to address company news, communicating new and upcoming research, and implementing communication policies and procedures to uphold CCDH’s brand image.
  • Briefing internal spokespeople ahead of interviews, maintaining good relationships with external journalists and conducting interviews with media staff.
  • Working with internal colleagues to plan and execute CCDH’s campaigns

Person Specification

  • At least 2 years’ experience of managing press/comms inquiries within a fast paced work environment, or working in journalism
  • An understanding of how to devise and implement a media strategy with experience in writing press releases, articles, blogs, and briefs.
  • Experience in public speaking to media outlets, and or reporters
  • Knowledge of respective media market in print, online, and broadcast media
  • Ability to be creative, identify good stories, and gain coverage in print, broadcast, and online media
  • Ability to provide briefings for journalists and spokespeople, and draft press releases and other media/comms related materials as necessary
  • Excellent organisational skills with an ability to adhere to tight deadlines, swift and accurate decision-making, and problem-solving skills
