NBC News Digital seeks a freelance London-based news editor to help manage NBCNews.com overnight U.S. time Monday to Friday (7 a.m. to 3 p.m. London time).

This position carries a lot of responsibility and requires excellent news judgment, as well as an ability to work under pressure with colleagues in New York, Los Angeles and across the world on breaking news and features. 

Meticulous copy editing skills are also required, as are the ability to write accurate and engaging headlines and an appreciation for visual storytelling. 

Key Responsibilities

  • As part of a small team of editors, manage NBCNews.com from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. GMT.
  • Identify the most important and relevant angles of the day’s top stories, and commission and edit breaking news stories and bounces. The ability to set up and manage a live blog is also crucial, as is the ability to think creatively about unique reporting and story angles that can be pursued exclusively for digital. 
  • Provide rigorous edits that ensure the tone of stories is aligned with NBC News’ strategy and brand, and work with journalists to find new ways to turn raw reporting into compelling digital content. Understand the power of social media for both reporting and discovery. 
  • Work with our art team to ensure optimal pictures and graphics for stories and collaborate with our Legal and Standards teams to ensure top-quality reporting. 
  • Must have the desire to work in a creative, demanding and competitive environment while being professional, nimble and communicative with other parts of the network.
  • Knowledge of producing editorial content for different audiences and platforms, such as search, social and partners is also required.
  • The successful candidate will be a collaborative all-rounder who can deliver clear guidance and efficiently juggle multiple tasks to help create unique and impactful stories.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. At least 7 years experience as a reporter and/or editor in a newsroom environment, and some of that time in a digital newsroom. 

Experience assigning and editing news-of-day articles and working with digital and broadcast journalists.
