The Voice is Britain’s only Black newspaper.

 

As we enter our 40th year we are looking for an experienced online journalist to join our fast-paced news team, to deliver quick-turnaround live news, break original and impactful stories, and write gripping in-depth features.

 

You will have a good understanding of community and news affecting the Black community at a local and national level, possess an excellent news sense, and demonstrate a track record in producing accurate copy to tight deadlines. You will be able to work alone and in a team, and be familiar with packaging videos, using pictures, embedding multimedia and blogging. You will also be able to make stories stand out across our social media platforms.

 

Key responsibilities

 

  • Work with the editor to manage and develop online content
  • Report on and edit stories to ensure they are accurate, concise and capture The Voice’s perspective and point of view to timely deadlines
  • Work with the wider editorial team to align content with strategic objectives
  • Master headlines and optimise copy for all platforms and our targeted audience (SEO)
  • Ensure the website is up to date, topical and relevant
  • Support the online weekend schedule for editorial and breaking news
  • Interview celebrities and community figures
  • Proofread and edit material

Skills

 

  • Minimum of two years’ experience at a professional news organisation
  • A good understanding of community and news affecting the Black community at a local and national level
  • Excellent news judgment
  • The ability to work fast and accurately under pressure
  • Demonstrate the ability to produce smart, original journalism
  • Solid understanding of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and how these platforms play a role in the news
  • Good understanding of media law – copyright, defamation, privacy etc
  • Must be proficient in WordPress
  • Possess experience in video editing
  • Ability to work in a team or alone
