What you’ll be doing

As the investigative journalist, you’ll provide a flow of important exclusive stories for Engineering & Technology (E&T) magazine and present them in new ways.

What we hope you can bring to the role

You’ll be an experienced investigative journalist and/or data journalist with a proven track record of unearthing exclusive stories that make a difference. You’ll have strong experience in writing for trade or business publications.

A background in magazine, news or broadcast and STEM reporting experience, is desirable.

A little more about the role

·To formulate and propose investigative and exclusive articles or multimedia for print or online publication.

·To produce stories of importance that make a wider impact in industry and in public discourse.

·To look for opportunities for stories from investigative and analytical means such as data sets and Freedom of Information requests.

·To contribute news and comment to the E&T website

·To work with features editors and other members of the E&T editorial team to present those stories in the best possible way in print and in digital channels.

·To experiment with new ways of telling stories through all E&T channels and through third party platforms.

·To ensure their articles are written and presented in the correct style and tone for E&T

·To help plan features and cover stories for the coming year

  • To take editorial responsibility for covering particular sectors or running stories as required

·To stay up to date with technology developments and issues by reading, conversing or attending events

A little more about what we’re looking for

·Education to at least degree level, or equivalent (Desirable: in a science or engineering subject)

·Portfolio demonstrating experience in researching and writing exclusive articles for national or specialist newspapers, magazines, books or websites

·Extensive experience in writing for trade or business publications.

·Knowledge of and contacts in engineering and technology industries

·Ability to understand technical material and to produce clear and accurate English, to the highest editorial standards, with meticulous attention to accuracy and details.

·Knowledge of industry-standard editorial techniques and conventions

·Thorough understanding of media law

Desirable Criteria:

·Data journalism skills and experience

·Knowledge of an additional language

·Awards for exclusive articles in trade press

·Familiarity with social media channels to promote news and as a research tool

·Experience and enthusiasm for experimenting with new digital technologies relevant to news provision.
