We are looking for an experienced journalist to work for our multi-award-winning general practice title

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled investigative journalist to join a multi-award-winning, market-leading team. We have a proud tradition of investigative journalism, with recent features including the growing private health sector, sexism within the British Medical Association and a major investigation into the GP practices that have closed for good.

The successful candidate will have a track record in leading successful investigations. They will have had a news background, and would ideally be skilled in data journalism. Ideally, they would have managed investigations carried out by other members of the team and would have line management experience. They will have to demonstrate exceptional organisational skills.

They will have ideas around presenting major multifaceted investigations online, including how they are packaged on the website and maximising the impact of social media. They will also be comfortable adapting the online pieces for print.

They may be expected to news edit on occasions when the deputy editor is. There will be scope for career progression.

They will work collaboratively in a small team, and also be part of a friendly, stimulating editorial environment at the magazine, which is one of a bigger group of healthcare publications.

This is a hybrid role, working one day or more a week at our offices in Farringdon in the City of London

Key responsibilities

  • Generating plenty of ideas for new investigations;
  • Either writing up or editing investigations, managing freelancers and reporters;
  • Planning online schedule for issue content – including how we can tailor the content to online;
  • Commissioning and managing freelancers for investigations and analysis.
  • Editing for our 10/12 print magazine, including: cover feature; analyses; data lowdown; update;
  • Occasional news editing.

Key requirements

Essential 

  • Strong record of writing successful investigations
  • News background
  • Exceptional organisational skills

Highly desirable

  • Experience of health policy reporting;
  • News editing experience – either as a news editor or deputising for the news editor.
  • Experience of data journalism.
