Want To Kick Start Your Career By Gaining Vital Experience In The Workplace?

If you’re a student or graduate of a journalism or PR course and fancy working in the built environment media, the International Building Press (IBP) is offering a range of internships this summer.

IBP is a not-for-profit organisation that brings together a diverse community of journalists and communication professionals who share a common passion for the built environment.

As part of IBP’s mission to increase diversity and inclusion, we are particularly keen to offer internships to people from under-represented groups.

Placements are typically at least four weeks long, and are open to anyone over 18 who has an interest in built environment communications.

Applications are invited from new entrants and learners on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, plus NCTJ and HND courses – ideally you will have the basics of journalism and/or media communications.

You can apply for one or more internship opportunities that interest you. All interns will be paid the National Living Wage by the employer, or London Living Wage for internships in London. The National Living Wage is £12.21 from April 2025, and the London Living Wage is currently set at £13.85 per hour.

Whatever internship you choose, you’ll join a busy team and enhance the media skills you already have with the experience of working alongside experienced journalists and PR specialists.

10 Things You’ll Get From Your IBP Internship

  1. Careful matching to a suitable employer.
  2. An introductory webinar in May, when you will meet others on the programme.
  3. A structured, paid internship this summer, with support throughout.
  4. Regular check-ins and a ‘buddy’ to help you get the most from your experience.
  5. The opportunity to get meaningful experience of working in the media or PR.
  6. Fantastic opportunity to learn from specialists in one or more areas of construction, property, housing, architecture and the built environment.
  7. Introduction to people who can boost your professional network.
  8. A written reference that you can use to attract future employers.
  9. Honorary membership of the IBP.
  10. An invitation to the IBP National Journalism Awards later in the year.
