We at spiked are delighted to announce our new internship programme. We are offering paid, six-month placements to aspiring writers, editors, podcast producers and videomakers who want to cut their teeth at the best political magazine in the world. If you’re hard-working and passionate about our pro-freedom, pro-democracy, pro-human politics, then this is the internship for you.

Successful applicants will work with us, five days a week, in our London office. We’ll train you up and if you do well there’s the possibility of more work at the end of it. There are two tracks to choose from. You can apply for an editorial internship, where you’d help us to produce our articles, features and essays, or an audio / visual internship, where you’d help us to produce our podcasts and videos.

EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP

To apply for an editorial internship, email internships@spiked-online.com, attaching the following:

1) A CV and cover letter

In the cover letter, tell us a bit about yourself, why you’re the right person for the programme, and why you’d like to work at spiked.

2) An opinion piece

In 500 words, take a story in the news and write an opinion piece in response to it – something you could see fitting in on spiked. The aim here is concision, clarity and timeliness, in response to a recent news story or media discussion, rather than chin-stroking takes on a general theme. Also, give it a strong headline and standfirst – in spiked style.

3) A pitch for a long-form spiked piece

In no more than 300 words, write a pitch for a long-form spiked piece that would chime with our politics and our readers. This could be for a piece of on-the-ground reporting, a long profile of a particular political or intellectual figure, or a feature drawing on a mix of interviews, research and reporting.

No prior experience is required. We’re looking for the most passionate applicants with the strongest work ethic. If you’re interested, email internships@spiked-online.com and attach a CV, cover letter and any other documents for the relevant tasks listed. Be sure to tell us in your email which type of internship you are applying for.

AUDIO / VISUAL INTERNSHIP

To apply for an audio / visual internship, email internships@spiked-online.com, attaching the following:

1) A CV and cover letter

In the cover letter, tell us a bit about yourself, why you’re the right person for the programme, and why you’d like to work at spiked.

2) A social-media clip promoting the spiked podcast

Using the YouTube video of the most recent episode of the spiked podcast, make a short promotional clip for social media. It should be around 45 seconds to 1 minute long, picking out a particularly sparky or polemical point. Add subtitles and write a tweet for it. Upload it to YouTube as an ‘unlisted’ video and include the link and suggested tweet in your email to us.

3) A pitch for a podcast guest, with suggested questions

In no more than 300 words, pitch a guest for The Brendan O’Neill Show. Give us a short outline of the guest and why you think he or she would be a fascinating person for Brendan to talk to. Just make sure it is someone who has never been on the show before. On top of that, research and write five questions Brendan could ask them (you can have some extra word count for this – but keep the questions short and pointed).

To Apply

You have until Monday 20 June to apply. A selection of applicants will be called in for an interview in the final week of June. Successful applicants will be expected to start work in July.
