Sifted is looking for an intern with a keen interest in journalism, startups and tech to join us in our newsroom for three months.
You will work closely with Sifted’s editorial team, including our editors, to cover the day’s top stories and assist with other editorial tasks. You will be a core part of our team, receive mentorship from experienced journalists and gain real insight into the running of a digital media platform.
The position is based in our newsroom in London — but we welcome applicants from all around Europe. This is a paid position, at the London Living Wage (£2,000 per month). No formal qualifications are required to apply, apart from the right to work in the UK.
We’re first and foremost looking for people who are curious and eager to learn — and have the skills and aptitudes outlined below. We strongly encourage anyone from an underrepresented background to apply for this scheme.
About Sifted
Sifted is a media platform reporting on the world of technology and startups in Europe, backed by the Financial Times. In four years we’ve become known for our high-quality journalism and fresh viewpoints, and a must-read for many founders, investors and people working in startups across the continent.
Our team of reporters, based in London and across Europe, aren’t chasing after the latest funding announcements or product releases; plenty of other sites have got that covered. We are telling the stories that should be told — big startup trends, compelling company profiles and the everyday lessons that come from growing a business and messing up along the way. We have grown from a standing start to 800k+ monthly unique visitors, and more than 100k newsletter subscribers, and have a lively social media following.
What Will You Be Doing?
- Writing news and data stories
- Subediting, proofreading and fact-checking
- Working on longer-form features
- Helping to write newsletters
- Shadowing reporters working on investigations
- Uploading stories to our website
- Photo sourcing and editing
- Researching and coming up with ideas for articles
- Joining editorial and wider team meetings
Requirements
- Want to learn more about the startup/tech industry — you don’t have to be an expert yet
- Can write to a deadline with flair and personality
- Have a keen eye for detail
- Have excellent written and spoken English (you don’t have to be native English speaker)
- Enjoy the challenge of keeping several plates spinning at the same time
- Are proactive and self-starting
- Communicate clearly and with confidence
- Have an interest in social media and digital publishing
- Other journalistic skills (eg audio/visual production) are a bonus, but not essential

Benefits
Hours: Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 9am — 6pm
Term: Three months in our London office (please note, this internship is not guaranteed to lead to a full-time position)
Pay: London Living Wage (£2,000 per month), on a contractor basis
Location: London, office based (3 days minimum) + remote
Mentorship: Over your time at Sifted you will work closely with our editors and reporters on news, features, subediting, newsletters and data stories.
