Job Description

Haringey Community Press is an independent community newspaper published by Social Spider CIC – a social enterprise which has four other news publications: Waltham Forest Echo, Enfield Dispatch, EC1 Echo and Barnet Post.

The Editor will be responsible for producing a community newspaper for Haringey every month, liaising with voluntary contributors from the community to develop articles to be included in the paper and writing articles as and when necessary.

The Editor will be based primarily at The Selby Centre, Selby Road, London, N17 8JL

Duties Include

  • Writing and editing articles for the newspaper
  • Commissioning contributions from volunteer writers
  • Responding to emails and enquiries from local people in a timely manner
  • Ensuring the newspaper reflects the interests and needs of the local community
  • Coordinating production and proofing of the newspaper with the designer
  • Developing the newspaper’s online presence by regularly uploading articles to the website and updating social media platforms
  • Writing and sending out both weekly and monthly newsletters via Mailchimp
  • Representing the newspaper at meetings and events that Social Spider is invited to or that we host ourselves
  • Developing relationships with the local community by developing local contacts, forging new partnerships with other organisations and acting as the public face of the newspaper

Person Specification

We are looking for a candidate who is familiar with the borough of Haringey and has (or knows how to develop) good contacts within the local community.

This role is suitable for someone who is experienced in local journalism and is comfortable working independently and autonomously.

Skills and Experience

Essential 

  • Experience in journalism and strong writing skills;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Strong organisational skills and knowledge of basic IT software;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Confident working independently;
  • Experience of using social media;

Desirable

  • Interest in local media
  • Knowledge of the borough of Haringey

Social Spider CIC is a social enterprise based in north London. We launched our first newspaper, Waltham Forest Echo in 2014 and have since launched Haringey Community Press, Enfield Dispatch, EC1 Echo and Barnet Post. We are a not-for-profit social enterprise that puts the concerns of our community at the heart of our publications. Our four print newspapers have a circulation of over 50,000. We are a small, fast-paced organisation developing a sustainable model for accountable and engaged local news when traditional models are in severe decline.
