A specialist events and B2B publishing business which serves the UK and international events industry, across meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions and outdoor events.
Exhibition News is the UK’s only magazine dedicated solely to the business of the £11 billion exhibitions industry, its organisers, venues, and deep-rooted supply chain.
The job
We are looking for an experienced, charismatic journalist with the hunger to search for news relevant to the exhibitions industry, and with the drive to fully immerse themselves with the sector.
This role is suitable for an experienced journalist looking to make the next step in their career.
The successful candidate will be well versed on common digital platforms and social media and have ideas on how to best use them to suit the ever-changing needs of readers.
The successful candidate will also place priority on developing, maintaining and working with a community of event organisers, venues and suppliers, and build meaningful professional relationships with key stakeholders.
As deputy editor, you will be responsible for supporting the editorial output of the magazine and associated website and social media channels to which they are assigned. The deputy editor will support to ensure that the magazine is planned in partnership with the portfolio’s commercial manager yet ensure commercial partnerships do not influence the editorial agenda.
The deputy editor will need to be a confident orator, comfortable presenting videos, hosting roundtables, moderating panels, and have the confidence to deliver speeches and presentations for large numbers of people.
The success of the deputy editor will be judged on the pattern of the number of requested subscriptions, and through bi-annual readership surveys on content quality.
The deputy editor will:
- Be charismatic
- Help plan and control editorial agenda
- Produce original content for print and online in house style and in line with editorial policy
- Read and sub-edit supplied content and correct for errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar and ensure house style
- Ensure magazine goes to press on deadline
- Ensure the website is updated daily and that no major news story is missed
- Rewrite copy to make it easier for readers to understand
- Verify facts using standard reference sources
- Evaluate submissions from writers to decide what to publish
- Develop story and content ideas while being mindful of the audience
- Approve final versions submitted by staff and support sign off of magazine to press
- Have input on final say on editorial decision-making
- Work closely with commercial department to understand and maintain awareness of magazine’s financial status
- To act as brand ambassador at events, both run by Mash Media and third party
- To host roundtable discussions, moderate panels, and host awards (both live and online), as and when agreed with stakeholders
- Deliver the opening address at the EN Awards to 1,200 people in confidence
- To forge strong relationships with industry stakeholders and devise a strong network of contacts
- Build a community of exhibition professionals and put themselves at the heart of the industry
Details
- Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm (subject to deadlines). Off-site event attendance is expected, usually in the evenings. Working from home can be considered in agreement with line manager, but some office time is essential
- 20 days’ holiday annually

- Salary: starting at £35,000pa (DOE)
- Office based in Kingston-upon-Thames, London
Requirements
- Five years’ journalism experience or NCTJ qualification desired
- Previous experience working on a B2B or consumer magazine desirable but not essential
- Confident moderator of live and online panel discussions, roundtables and awards
- Strong content and copy writing skills
- Excellent grammar and command of English
- Experience with CMS, preferably WordPress
- A responsible and pro-active attitude
- Ability to prioritise workload when required and work towards deadlines
- High attention to detail
- Understanding of high-pressure environment of news gathering and able to file copy speedily and accurately
- Good stamina and energy and an interest in the exhibitions industry
