From 2021, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism will run three fellowship placements each year across the organisation. You do not need to have a journalism degree but you should be a graduate (or NCTJ or equivalent) or in your last year of your degree and be able to show evidence of a commitment to journalism.

To support the better representation of our diverse society within the journalism industry, a minimum of two of these fellowship placements will go to individuals from under-represented groups. We are particularly keen to support applications from people from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups and British Muslim communities in the UK.

What will the fellowship be like?

The fellowship placement will typically last for three months and will be paid the London living wage. The Bureau can offer additional support for accommodation if required. Our staff of experienced journalists will provide mentorship for you during the months before you start at the Bureau. You will gain first-hand experience of working on our investigations and can expect to play a meaningful role in the team. Our previous fellows at the Bureau have gone on to successful careers in the media.

Our placements:

The Bureau Fellowship:

This is a three-month fellowship programme starting in Spring. Anyone can apply, but due to the under-representation of certain groups in journalism, this opportunity is particularly aimed at people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities, those with disabilities and disadvantaged groups as part of our positive action initiative to improve media diversity and champion inclusive journalism.

Fellowship in partnership with Aziz Foundation:

In partnership with the Aziz Foundation, the Bureau is offering a three-month paid fellowship to alumni Aziz scholars beginning in the Summer. The Aziz foundation offers Masters scholarships to people from the British Muslim community and will fund one fellowship a year at the Bureau to improve media diversity and champion inclusive journalism.

Fellowship in partnership with Google:

We hope to offer a three-month paid fellowship in partnership with the Google News Initiative starting in the Summer. This fellowship has run extremely successfully for the past five years. We expect to open applications in the Spring, which will be through a website we will link to. Applicants will need to be current students or students who graduated in 2020.

What are we looking for in a fellow?

We want someone who is excited by the opportunity to work for a newsroom with a focus on rigorous and ground-breaking journalism that drives impact and positive change. You will thrive in a team and bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the organisation.

How do I apply?

The Bureau Fellowship:

To apply for the Bureau’s inclusion fellowship please fill out our application form here. You will be asked to provide:

  • Your CV including references.
  • Any key examples of your work.
  • A short cover letter on why you want to work for the Bureau and what unique perspectives and skills you could bring to the placement.
  • Complete the equality monitoring form.

Applications close January 31, 2021

Fellowship in partnership with Aziz Foundation:

To apply for the fellowship placement in partnership with The Aziz Foundation, you need to be an Aziz scholar. The Foundation will circulate details of the fellowship to its scholars and all applications will then be assessed by the Bureau, which will select the fellow. Fellowship in partnership with Google:

We expect to open applications in the Spring for the Google fellowship which will be through a website we will link to. You cannot apply directly to the Bureau.

The Bureau is committed to being an equal opportunity employer. We strive to create a diverse, inclusive and adaptable environment where people are encouraged and supported to do their best work.
