Can you put the human interest in stories about heat pumps, renewable energy jobs and flood alleviation schemes? Are you a dynamic, self-motivated video-first journalist based in Yorkshire & Humber? Then we would love to hear from you.

The Local Storytelling Exchange is seeking a journalist to find and share stories of climate and nature action across Yorkshire & Humber.

Guided by the Exchange’s editorial team you will be able to work independently, be an excellent relationship builder and a sensitive storyteller who can convey what climate and nature action look like through people-focused stories.

You will be able to capture brilliant video content that fizzes on TikTok and then write it up into vibrant articles that fly across regional news platforms.

Alongside your multimedia journalism skills you will have the confidence and kindness to build long-term relationships with contacts, spotting the potential in media-shy individuals and working with Exchange colleagues to build them into assured spokespeople who have the belief to tell their stories powerfully across different platforms.

As a can-do person you will be an ideas machine who is able to constructively work with key regional partners to develop stories which blend their own goals with those of the Exchange.

The Exchange is seeking to find and amplify voices and stories that reflect the diversity of our society in terms of lived experience, cultural or socio-economic background, ethnicity and geography/region and strongly encourages people of all backgrounds to apply for these roles

Responsibilities Include:

Storytelling

  • Find and tell people-led stories of climate and nature action and impacts using persuasive content tailored to target audiences and relevant media and social channels.
  • Collect visual and audio assets where relevant / develop stories in other formats (e.g. video content, images, social media) to extend the reach of the story.
  • Build relationships with local media to place these stories in relevant outlets – including social media channels.
  • Use active listening and empathy to support people in telling their stories in a clear and authentic way, building on their own values.
  • Work closely with the Exchange’s editorial team to prioritise story subjects most relevant to your region and deliver on core objectives.
  • Be an “ear to the ground” for your region, feeding back information and potential story opportunities to the editorial team.

Community Engagement

  • Help prepare individuals for broadcast interviews such as drafting briefing materials and attending interviews, where appropriate.
  • Help groups/individuals participate in/run talks, events and workshops.

Strategy

  • Develop the strategy for storytelling in your geographic area to identify key climate and nature issues and map key media, community and political figures.
  • Monitor regularly the local news agenda / local activity / social media on climate and nature to identify trends and potential stories.
  • Identify and develop relationships with relevant groups, organisations, and individuals in the area.
