gal-dem is hiring a Senior Editor, specialising in Politics. gal-dem is a socially responsible organisation that spotlights and supports the voices and experiences of people of colour from marginalised genders through creativity that spans traditional journalism, audio and video.
We are looking for a Senior Editor to join our team and lead our politics editing, editorial partnership building responsibilities, and managing our Editorial Assistant and summer Fellow. The Politics section at gal-dem under its current editor has shaped debates, driven change, and championed grassroots activism, focussing on the issues both global and local that affect the most marginalised in society.
We are looking for an editor to continue on this mission, whilst bringing their own passion and style to the role. Political stories at gal-dem at their heart have human, emotive narratives that drive action in the various social systems that marginalised groups are faced with. Your work in commissioning should tell forward-looking stories with purpose, heart and social impact at their core.
You will be working within a small team of other commissioning editors with an editor in chief. gal-dem’s newsroom thrives on collaboration, and you must be ready to join daily ideas meets and regular brainstorms to help support your colleagues in developing their content, and get stuck in with subbing and production too.
You will also be responsible for growing our editorial partnerships, managing junior members of staff, and nurturing new talent and writers from our communities. Familiarity with media law, sub-editing and digital publishing is highly desired, although training is available on the job.
Required Work
We’re not looking for candidates to tick every box, but in the role you will be expected to rise to meet these expectations:
- Be responsible for commissioning, editing, writing and publishing the majority of politics content across the site, with a focus on issues including migration, human rights, gender, local activism, Westminster politics and stories from across the Global South.
- Identify the key voices gal-dem should be seeking to platform and find writers and first person experiences from within our communities.
- Generate and seek out original stories and content ideas not seen elsewhere.
- Keep a close eye on breaking news and the conversations happening within our communities on social media, in the news and in offline spaces.
- Acquire and nurture contacts with writers and organisations who may want to publish exclusives with us.
- Use analytics and SEO to inform and improve the content we publish.
- Commission illustrations to accompany politics content.
- Help to manage and contribute to the annual gal-dem print edition.
- Forward plan content, formats and features or ‘featurettes’ up to six months in advance
- Manage junior members of editorial staff, including one editorial assistant and one summer fellowship placement
- Take a pro-active role in editorial strategy, namely building editorial partnerships with like-minded publishers, organisations and grassroots activist groups
- Support the editorial team and Editor-in-Chief with top edits
Key Skills:
