The Bureau is seeking a Fact-checker and Subeditor to join our production desk as maternity cover. This role is critical to ensuring the content we publish is both compelling and accurate. You will be responsible for editing our stories and newsletters as well as fact-checking our investigations. You will also support the wider editorial production process, helping ensure all published content meets the Bureau’s high standards of quality, clarity and engagement.
About the Bureau
The Bureau is the UK’s largest independent investigative journalism organisation and our groundbreaking investigations tell the stories others can’t. We aim to expose systemic wrongs, challenge misinformation and ultimately spark positive change. With no corporate or political agenda, we bring to light serious issues affecting individuals and communities in the UK and around the world. Our award-winning work has reached millions across the globe – online, in print, on TV and on radio.
We put impact at the heart of the reporting we do. At the Bureau, we believe the purpose of investigative journalism is to keep democracy strong by holding power in check. This means giving people the information they need to spark positive change in the world.
About the role
This is a role that combines two duties, both on the production desk.
As our fact-checker you’ll ensure our investigations meet bulletproof standards of accuracy – scrutinising sourcing, reporting methods, data, reporters’ notes and interview recordings.
As subeditor, you’ll be responsible for turning a recently filed or desked draft into the story published on our site. You’ll ensure that our knotty, complex and sometimes niche investigations are turned into clear and compelling copy.
While fact-checking will be the primary responsibility, a significant amount of time will be spent doing subbing work. As such, the ideal candidate will have a high level of subbing experience: 2-3 years at a national newsroom or equivalent.
You will be a good fit if you have:
• Proven experience in editing journalistic content, ideally investigations.
• Attention to detail and a thoughtful approach to verifying facts and sources.
• Some knowledge of investigative reporting methods and practices.
• A clear understanding of journalistic ethics, media law and the importance of accuracy and fairness.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to sensitively discuss and explain edits you’ve made with the reporting team in question.
• Fact-checking experience.
• Experience working with complex datasets, spreadsheets and other research tools.
Additional desirable experience and skills for this role include:
• An understanding of media law, including defamation and libel.
Benefits
What we offer:
• 25 days’ annual leave (pro rata for part-time hours)
• Additional gifted leave during Christmas festive break
• Hybrid working
• 9-day fortnight benefit (pro rata for part-time hours)
• EAP – Employee assistance programme
• Enhanced sick pay
• Enhanced maternity and paternity pay after 12 months’ service
• Learning and development opportunities
• Cycle to work scheme
