Our news stories, MP profiles, political explainers and original commentary help readers better understand Westminster and beyond.

We are seeking a detail-orientated, fast-learning Editorial Intern to support our small editorial team in producing and maintaining our extensive MP and political profiles database. This role is ideal for someone looking to gain hands-on experience in political journalism, editorial research, and fact-checking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Primary Task: Fact-check and update editorial profiles of MPs and other political figures, using a set of defined but flexible guides.
    This includes:
    • Verifying political career history (election results, frontbench/committee roles, maiden speeches, etc.)
    • Cross-referencing key votes (e.g. Brexit, assisted dying) and leadership endorsements
    • Updating contact and social media information
    • Cleaning up prose where needed for clarity or tone
    • Highlighting interesting or newsworthy additions based on recent events
  • Other Duties:
    • Emailing potential advertisers, offering politics.co.uk advertising opportunities
    • Building a business development database for advertising sales
    • Conduct administrative research as required (e.g. cross-referencing public statements, locating speeches, finding biographical information)
    • Maintain tracking sheets and contribute to editorial review logs
    • Assist with occasional content production (e.g. summaries, briefing notes, or light editing)

Skills & Experience Required

Essential:

  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • A deep interest in UK politics
  • Ability to fact-check reliably across multiple open sources (e.g. Hansard, Parliament.uk, Wikipedia, news media)
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Familiarity with UK political structures (elections, parties, select committees, etc.)
  • Ability to follow editorial guidelines and adapt to house style
  • Self-motivated, capable of working independently and managing time efficiently

Desirable:

  • Experience using WordPress
  • Previous writing or editing experience (student media, blogs, etc.)
  • Interest in journalism or digital publishing
