Applications are now invited for the Daily Mail editorial training scheme (sports sub-editors) that begins in September 2020. We are looking for budding subs, with an excellent grounding in the English language, who want to work for Britain’s most successful newspaper group.

Our trainee sub-editors embark on a year-long programme that involves intense training, assessment, and on-the-job experience at a national newspaper. The successful applicants will probably have a post-grad in journalism or NCTJ qualification and will have shown a commitment to journalism by working for their student newspaper or website and gained work experience in newsrooms.

We want self-starters with a real interest in sport and a proven track record in grammar, punctuation, and accuracy. A flair for headline writing and page layout skills would be a bonus. Previous graduates of the training scheme now hold senior positions on the Mail and its sister paper the Mail on Sunday.

The course starts in September with an intensive in-house training month during which the trainees are introduced to Mail style and culture. It is followed by five months placement at the Scottish Daily Mail in Glasgow – after which the trainees will join the sports desk.

Trainees will be on the best journalism course in the business and paid a competitive salary while they train. Nearly all are offered staff jobs at the end.
