The RightsInfo team is growing and we’re looking for a new News and Social Media Editor.

Our current News and Social Media Edito is taking on a new role within RightsInfo as Senior Reporter.

The Role

This is an exciting role combining journalism with responsibility for some of the most vital parts of RightsInfo’s public presence, including social media channels and our website.

You will lead a range of digital projects, managing our team of volunteer writers as well as producing your own editorial content. All as part of our mission to build knowledge and support for human rights through engaging, accessible and beautifully-presented online human rights content.

You’ll have the freedom to develop ideas and introduce new systems for improving the way we do things. To succeed, you will need to have experience of managing deadlines in a busy news environment.

Main Responsibilities

This role combines a number of different areas, including content creation, editorial control, social media and volunteer management.

Content Creation

  • Manage our forward planning for editorial content to ensure that we are ahead of the curve, and fresh articles and videos are created daily during the working week.
  • Produce (and support the production of) high-quality digital content for the RightsInfo website and social media channels, to change the conversation about human rights.
  • Liaise with contacts and partner organisations to research and create original, engaging digital content.
  • Bring creative ideas for new editorial projects, and the drive to make them happen.

Social Media

  • Coordinate the planning for and dissemination of new stories, features and content across RightsInfo’s social channels, to create maximum impact
  • Ensure that messages are consistent with our brand and guidelines across all channels.
  • Allocate digital marketing spend where appropriate.
  • Use data and analytics to drive decisions in pursuit of increasing brand awareness and engagement rates.
  • Grow a sense of community across all our social channels, building relationships with passionate and influential individuals who can help us increase our impact.

Editorial Control

  • Ensure the highest quality of all editorial output, checking content is legally compliant and meets our standards, objectives and messaging.
  • Commission and edit work from our senior reporter and sub-editors.
  • Respond to complaints and corrections, doing so in a professional manner.

Volunteer Management

  • Commission and support our amazing pool of volunteer writers.
  • Train our volunteers in writing skills, use of WordPress, and any analytics or scheduling tools that we use.
  • Along with others in the team, ensure the volunteers are fully supported and able to contribute to RightsInfo’s work, including assessing and improving how we engage with them.

Are You The Ideal Candidate?

Essential skills and experience:

  • At least 6 years’ journalistic experience (preferably a combination of reporting and editing/commissioning in a newsroom).
  • Creating content with a social audience in mind, including video formats and content for different social platforms.
  • The ability to produce high-quality written content with minimal supervision on WordPress and a range of social platforms.
  • A clear and engaging writing style, which is accessible and audience-focused.
  • A nose for the news cycle – good editorial judgement and the ability to spot stories and manage the news agenda.
  • Knowledge of media law, compliance and charity commission rules.
  • Storytelling, with a track record in communicating complex issues simply and effectively.
  • Demonstrable skill at handling urgent daily work alongside long-term projects.
  • Experience of incorporating the latest digital trends into your work.
  • Working within online-focused news – e.g. Buzzfeed, Vice, AJ+, Upworthy.

Desirable skills and experience:  

  • Production of social video.
  • Knowledge of the UK’s human rights landscape, which could include social welfare issues such as homelessness.
  • Knowledge of human rights law.
  • Experience of working in a newsroom.
  • Experience of working in a digital startup or innovative news agency.
  • Growing an audience on a social media channel – be that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube or similar.
  • Paid social media advertising

The Details

Salary: £27k-32k per annum dependent on experience and skills.

Contract: 6 month contract initially, with the likelihood of a permanent contract at the end of that period.

Position: Reporting to the Chief Executive, and managing the Senior Reporter, Digital Intern, Sub-editors and volunteer writers.

Hours: Full-time

Location: Central London

Qualifications: Your experience and skills are more important to us than formal academic qualifications, although we would look favourably on people with relevant skills-based qualifications such as a journalism, communications or video degree.
